LAHORE, June 29: Faisalabad SSP Zafar Iqbal Lak who was found creating a housing society with police welfare fund without any authority or permission has allegedly issued an advance cheque despite instructions by the higher authorities to withdraw Rs16 million paid by him earlier to a landlord .
According to sources in police department, Mr Lak, who is connected with an influential political family, was found making the housing society for police employees with official police welfare fund.
When DIG Rana Altaf Qamar reported the matter to the provincial IGP, the latter expressed his ignorance about any permission for the society and constituted an inquiry committee under Additional IGP Khalid Latif and DIG Welfare Javed Noor to look into the matter.
Sources said the committee summoned the SSP who could not justify under whose permission he was creating the society. He could not tell the location of the land for which he had already allegedly paid Rs16 million out of the welfare fund under his command, sources claimed.
They said following that the inquiry committee asked the SSP to withdraw the money from the landlord and deposit it with the welfare fund account. But, they claimed, the SSP has instead issued an advance cheque of Rs10 million (for July 7, 2003), intending to deduct the price of the land from the salaries of beneficiaries among his subordinates. —Intikhab Hanif
