KARACHI: BIE to issue computerized enrolment cards

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, June 29: The Board of Intermediate Education, Karachi, will start issuing computerized enrolment cards to college students from the next academic year.

This was stated by the BIE chairman, Prof Iftikhar H Zaidi at a press briefing on Sunday. He said that the board had decided to issue computerized cards to candidates for which two million rupees had been allocated in the budgetary expenditures of the new fiscal year.

He said that in order to bring transparency, accuracy and promptness in the compilation of results, an amount of Rs2.5 million had been allocated for expansion in the existing computer section of the board.

Justifying the need of improving the conduction of exams, which involve internal working at the board and arrangements at colleges, including the hiring of invigilators and other examiners, Mr Zaidi said that different people had been assigned to carry out research and furnish recommendations in this regard.

During the recently concluded intermediate exams, he said that vigilance teams of the board had felt that sitting arrangements and performance of invigilation staff was not upto the mark at some of the examination centres.

To improve the holding of exams, the board has decided to increase remuneration of college teachers for discharging different examination duties. As per decision of the board, the payment to the centre superintendent, deputy centre superintendent, assistant centre superintendent and invigilators would be increased by 25 to 40 per cent.

He said that the board had also decided to increase the number of merit scholarships for students. Instead of giving three awards to students in each faculty, the board would give 10 merit cash awards of Rs6,000 to the students of each faculty every year. On sports events for college students, the board would spend Rs1.5 million, he informed.

Mr Zaidi said that the board would establish a new information centre at its main entrance this year so that students could easily get information in comparatively lesser time.

The board approved the budgetary expenditures of Rs176.4 million for the new fiscal year, he said adding that income would be generated through enrolment, registration and examination fee.

The board has decided to increase Rs40 in the existing examination fee while Rs20 in the enrolment fee, which would be effective from the annual examinations 2004. It is estimated that the board would be able to generate an additional amount of Rs12 million with this increase.

Mr Zaidi was assisted by the BIE secretary, Prof Muhammad Zaheer Paras and the controller of examinations, Prof Amjad Ali during the press briefing.
