HYDERABAD, June 29: The Anti-Thal Canal Action Committee leaders have pledged that they will remain united till the the success of the ongoing struggle against the Thal canal project.

They were speaking on Sunday at roadside meetings in Khathar, Sehri, Tando Mohammad Khan and other areas on their way to Golarchi from Hyderabad in pursuance of the struggle launched by them against the Thal canal.

The convener of the action committee and president, PPP (Sindh), Nisar Ahmed Khuhro, termed the canal “a conspiracy to convert Sindh into a desert”.

He said that the people of Sindh would not accept any decision of the “unrepresentative government”.

He said that when work on the motorway project could be stopped halfway through, then the ongoing work on the Thal canal could also be stopped “to save Sindh from total destruction”.

The president, Sindh Water Committee and chief of the Awami Tehrik, Rasool Bux Palejo, claimed that Sindh had been trampled over during the last 50 years.

Among those who spoke on the occasion were the chief of the Sindh Taraqqi Passand Party, Dr Qadir Magsi; the general secretary, SNF, Gul Mohammad Jakhrani; the general secretary, JUI-F, Dr Khalid Mehmood Soomro; PML-N leader Afzal Gujjar; and the president, Sindh Abadgar Board, Abdul Majeed Nizamani.

Earlier, the motorcade for Golarchi started from the residence of MNA Nawab Mohammad Yousuf Talpur in Qasimabad.

Badin: The protesters, who started marching from Hyderabad, arrived at Badin on Sunday evening after passing through Matli and Talhar.

Addressing the public, the leaders blamed President Gen Pervez Musharraf for approving the greater Thal canal.

They condemned the government for construction of the canal despite opposition by Sindh.

They said the federal government should shelve the project as it had already been rejected by the Sindh Assembly, which had adopted an unanimous resolution against it.

Earlier, hundreds of activists carrying their party flags held a demonstration against the Thal canal project in Badin.

About 400 women belonging to the Sindhiyani Tehrik started marching from the Khoski bus stop all the way upto the Mehran Chowk. They were led by Begum Zour, Salehiya and Bakhtawar.
