The Club Champion starts off as day’s best
KARACHI, June 28: The Club Champion, a thoroughbred five-year-old bay horse from Yateem out of Zircon, starts off as our day’s best when the Summer Gymkhana Meeting gets under way at the Karachi Racecourse on Sunday.
Only last week, the bay horse owned by M. Ateeq came in with a rattling burst to pip front runner Roberto Carlos Fan at the winning post in a time of one minute 5 3/5 seconds carrying a heavy burden of nine stones and four pounds on his back, going over five furlongs after an absence of nearly three and half months from the racing track.
On Sunday, although contesting in a higher Division, The Club Champion will be carrying only seven stones and 11 pounds going over the same distance, now running 21 pounds lighter.
In the race with only seven runners in contention, is Shah Mardan Shah II Pir Pagaro’s VII thoroughbred bay mare Fire Of Desire, winning her last two starts and now on course for a hat-trick of victories.
But the Flaming Arrow - Sweet Desire descendent will now be carrying a crushing weight of nine stones nine pounds, five pounds more then what she carried during her last win and 26 pounds more than The Club Champion.
With his weight advantage, The Club Champion seems to be a sitter in this race, with Bold Commander Donatello and Dur-e-Yamen, a chicken in the weights carrying 7-9 joining the fray.
Only seven events have been drawn up on the racing programme, all going over the sprinting distance of five furlongs. The first race begins at 1-30 p.m.
In the opener with 13 runners in the field, Grey Boy is fancied in these columns to pass the winning post ahead of Tom Cruise and Bye Bye.
The chestnut horse Sovero, yet to register a victory over here, should overcome that taboo and register his maiden victory in the second event, closely followed home by Yasmin K. Khan’s bay horse Dauntless and Lucky Lover, a worthy winner last time out.
If all goes well, the seven-year-old chestnut horse Ustadon Ka Ustad should win the next event for the mere asking, with Yaqoob Choice and Sajan Black close on his heels.
After two victories on the trot, Khalid Ali’s roan colt Your Pleasure in on course for a hat-trick of wins in the fourth race of the afternoon, with Canon Again, Love Land and Knight Fighter challenging the winner throughout the race.
In the fifth race with 13 runners in the field, seven of them will be making their appearance on this track for the very first time, while the rest of six contenders are still virgins at the time of starting. So we have made no selection in this event.
Miss Shahzadi Erum’s dark bay colt Sardar with a good lad astride, should register another triumph for trainer Iftikhar Ali, but will have to work up a sweat in overcoming the challenge of Prince Of Arabia and Blue’s Night in the sixth event.
