LONDON, June 28: Alexander Popp has the right credentials to play under the British flag but the German will never switch allegiance.
Britain has been eyeing the towering Popp, son of an English mother and German father, ever since he reached the quarter-finals at Wimbledon in 2000.
In a country starved of tennis success, Popp’s loyalty to Germany came under scrutiny again after he claimed the scalp of 11th seed Jiri Novak to reach the fourth round on Saturday.
“I’ve been playing for Germany for the last 26 years so I don’t think that’s going to change,” Popp said following his 6-3 6-4 7-6 third-round win.
