Kapali steals limelight

BRISBANE, June 28: A fine all-round performance by teenager Alok Kapali helped put Bangladesh in control of their tour match against the Queensland Academy of Sport on Saturday.

Kapali scored 55 with the bat then captured four wickets for 24 as the visitors looked to start their tour of Australia with a win.

Resuming at 86 for three, Bangladesh snuck past the Academy’s first innings of 201 before declaring at 203 for nine.

When stumps were drawn on the second of four days, the Academy were 153-7 in their second innings, leading by 151 with just three wickets in hand.

Bangladesh made a poor start to the day when they slumped to 112-6 when medium pacer James Hopes (4-35) quickly dismissed Al-Shahriar (four) and Mohammad Ashraful (39).

When Sanwar Hossain also went cheaply, Bangladeshi hopes for a first innings lead looked faint until Kapali came to the rescue.

The 19-year-old struck six fours and a six and shared a 70-run partnership with Khaled Mashud (38) to rebuild the innings.

He then grabbed four wickets with his leg-spinners as the locals lost six wickets for 86 runs.
