KARACHI: Mob sets bus on fire; police use teargas

KARACHI, June 28: Police resorted to teargas shelling and baton charge to disperse angry people, who set a bus on fire after an accident in Chakiwara on Saturday.

The law and order situation aroused, when a Thatta-bound bus (LSB-829) hit a man, Riaz Qasim, 30, near Baloch Chowk in Chakiwara police limits, Lyari. In the accident, both legs of Riaz were fractured. He was shifted to a hospital for operation.

Immediately after the accident, area people gathered on the spot and started raising slogans against reckless driving. They set the bus on fire and pelted stones on the moving vehicles. The vehicular movement remained suspended on the road near Baloch Chowk for several hours.

Police reached the spot to control the situation, but they were also attacked by the angry mob. The police resorted to teargas shelling to disperse the people and also baton-charged them.

To bring the situation under control, police picked up six people for breach of peace. The road for traffic was reopened in the evening.

SUICIDE: : A youth committed suicide at his house in Chakiwara.

Rafaqat Ali, 20, consumed some poisonous stuff to commit suicide. He was taken to a hospital in unconscious condition. However, the doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.

The family told the police that Rafaqat had fallen in love with some girl, who turned down his proposal. In a fit of utter depression, he committed suicide. Believing it a suicide case, police handed over the body to his family for burial.

ACCIDENT: : A 55-year-old woman was knocked down to death by a speeding car in Landhi.

Police said that Jamila Sharif was crossing a road in Landhi- 89, when a speeding car hit her. She died on the spot. The body was shifted to a hospital for autopsy and later handed over to her family.

ARRESTS: : The officials of Crime Investigation Department (CID) have arrested seven people for their alleged involvement in robberies and recovered stolen jewellery and passports from their possession.

The CID police claimed that they had arrested Naeem Butt, Kamran alias Kami, Amjad Ali, Ahad Shaikh, Sabir Hussain, Tanveer Hussain, and Mohammad Tariq.
