BRISBANE, June 27: Bangladesh made an encouraging start to their tour of Australia on Friday by grabbing the upper hand in their opening match against the Queensland Academy of Sport.
Tapash Baisya captured three for 33 as the Bangladeshi bowlers ripped through the hosts for just 201.
Promising teenager Mohammad Ashraful then struck an unbeaten 33, including four fours and two sixes, to help the tourists reach stumps at 86-3 after they had slumped to 57-3.
“It was a good team effort you have to think, we’re playing against some reasonable players,” Bangladesh coach Dav Whatmore said. “It was encouraging... but tomorrow’s another day so we’ll have to knuckle down.”
Bangladesh made a perfect start after their captain Khaled Mahmud won the toss and
sent the opposition in with Baisya collecting three quick wickets.
The medium pacer dismissed openers Brendan Nash and Daniel Payne in the fourth over and then removed Aaron Nye in his next over before Lee Carseldine and James Hopes steadied the innings.
They added 100 for the fourth wicket before Nye departed for 53. Left-handed Carseldine then fell eight runs short of a century after hitting 15 fours and a six.
His dismissal triggered a collapse with the last five wickets tumbling for 36 runs.
Bangladesh made a slow start to their reply with opener Javed Omar failing to get off the mark in a 37-ball innings that lasted 48 minutes.
Hannan Sarker was more adventurous, scoring 19 off 37 balls, and Habibul Bashar made 20.
The Bangaldeshis are touring Australia for the first time and will play two Tests and three One-day Internationals against the world champions.
