PESHAWAR, June 27: NWFP Chief Minister Akram Khan Durrani has proposed a meeting of all the four chief ministers to find a solution to the issues confronting the district governments in the country.

Speaking at a meeting here on Friday, he said the local bodies ministers of the provinces should come up with proposals for removing flaws from the system so that power could be delegated to the grass roots level in real sense.

The chief minister said the government would ensure the writ of law at all cost and would take to task those elements who wanted to take the law into their hands.

He stated that protection to life and property of the common man was the prime responsibility of the MMA government. It would utilize all its resources to tighten noose around the criminal elements, he added.

The chief minister criticized those elements who exploited the murder of Dr Farooq of Ayub Medical College for personal interests. These vested interests politicized the incident, brought the masses on streets, caused damage to the public property, and above all, created problems for the common man, he said.

The chief minister asked if the law and order was the responsibility of the district government, why all the complaints regarding law and order were coming to the provincial government.

These things pointed out loopholes in the district government system, he added.

The Nazims should work above the party politics for the system and must point out those involved in corruption and embezzlement, he said, adding they should initiate action against corrupt elements.

Mr Durrani said the government had received complaints of corruption, embezzlement and misuse of authority against some district Nazims, however, instead of taking direct action, the government referred the cases to the provincial assembly.

He said that reports against some town Nazims had also been received who were allegedly victimizing the opponents, particularly in allocation of funds for development schemes.

The chief minister said the MMA government wanted continuity of the district government system and had removed all the apprehensions of the district Nazims in this regard.
