KARACHI: MQM seeks halt to work on Thal canal

By Our Reporter

KARACHI, June 26: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s MPAs have asked President Musharraf and Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Jamali to ensure that construction of the greater Thal canal is stopped forthwith.

They maintained that aspirations of the people of the province should be respected. The MPAs termed the greater Thal canal project anti-Sindh.

They said, “Twice the Sindh assembly has adopted resolutions against the project, yet the work is continued.” They said that it was tantamount to exacerbating the sense of deprivation of the people of Sindh.

The Pakistan Awami Tehrik, Sindh chapter, also opposed the project and maintained that greater Thal canal project was a conspiracy to turn Sindh into a desert. They urged the elected representatives from Sindh in the parliament to raise the issue in national assembly and the senate.

The general secretary of PAT warned that if the elected representative from Sindh failed to raise the issue, the people of Sindh would gherao them.
