LANDI KOTAL, June 25: Unidentified men kidnapped a custom official with his friend from Yousuf Talaab area in Bara tehsil here, on Wednesday.

The official, Amanullah and his friend Zakria, both residents of Peshawar, had gone to Yousuf Talaab to offer condolence on the death of one of their friends.

On their way back, the vehicle they were travelling in was intercepted at gunpoint by unidentified kidnappers, who whisked away both. The vehicle was later found abandoned at a deserted location. The motive behind the kidnapping was stated to be for ransom.

Following the kidnapping, the Bara assistant line officer of Khasadar force, Nawaz Khan Afridi, was injured when he was fired upon while trying to arrest a Sipah resident in connection with the kidnapping of the custom official and his friend.

The assailant was overpowered by other Khasadars and sent him to the lock-up. The administration also sealed dozens of shops owned by Sipah residents in the Bara market.

FIRE ARMS: The Jamrud political administration after an agreement reached with the Kukikhel tribe elders announced a ban on carrying of fire arms in the vicinity of Jamrud bazaar.

A jirga of selected Kukikhel elders was called at the Assistant Political Agent’s office in Jamrud to review and control  the  law and order at the  Jamrud  bazaar.  The administration wanted the local elders to take the responsibility for maintenance of law and order in the area, which the elders refused.

The elders, however, extended their full support to the administration in the drive. The authorities had earlier with the support of elders banned test firing of weapons at the Wazirdhand arms market.

The decision was, however, resented by the Jamrud residents, who  held a jirga on Wednesday and vowed to resist  the administration’s move by holding protest rallies and processions.

STUDENTS INJURED: At least 14 schoolchildren were injured when the roof of their classroom collapsed after a speeding truck rammed into it on Wednesday.

The students of class VII of Shinwari Public School, situated on Shalman Road, had just went into the classroom when the vehicle crashed into the building, collapsing the roof.
