KARACHI, June 23: Fancied Lipton produced a dazzling performance to clinch Karachi Gymkhana Summer Bridge Tournament by accumulating 132 Victory Points (VPs) at KG Hall on Sunday.

Lipton having World Master Rashidul Ghazi, M.A.Ansari, Pervaiz Mirza, Tariq Rasheed Khan, Nasir Reza Khan and Abdul Khaliq in their fold won six out of seven matches to claim the title.

Lipton returned home with a convincing victories in the last phase of the Championship.

Giants, leaders of the second days proceedings, faced national team Allana in the fifth round, it proved to be a very close match and Allana returned with five National match points (IMPs) victory, thus gaining 16 and conceding 14 to Giants, which team was still in lead with a score of 97 VPs.

Chandna also met the same fate and lost to Four Bidders 14-16, but still they were on the second spot with a score of 93 VPs.

Lipton faced Candyland and mustered 20 to raise their score to 89 VPs, thus coming in the mainstream again.

The sixth round match between Giants and Lipton actually decided the fate, when Lipton outpaced Giants 22-8 thus raising their score to 111 VPs. Giants with Shahin Iqbal, Masud Mazhar, Maj (retd) Zaidi, Mirza Shauq Hussain and Fehmina Shauq made on all out effort to avert the disaster, but the opponents proved too good for them.

Allana, comprising world Master Jan-e-Alam Fazli, Rehman Allana, Sultan Siddiqui, Rashid Jafer, Sarfraz and Tehsin Gheewala also improved their position when they pitched up against Chandna and annexed 20 conceding 10 VPs.

Candyland drawn against Pak Oils in the sixth round and it became their all important match they registered a moral boosting 25-2 win.

Seventh round was quite open for all the top four teams, with an outside chance to the underdogs Four Bidders. Lipton used all tricks to their trade to oust Allana 21-9 thus came at the top with a total score of 132 VPs.

Giants defeated Four Bidders 22-8, but they had to contend for the second berth, even with the maximum score.

Candyland, with their regular three pairs of Ziaullah Baig-Hamid, Khalid Mohiuddin-Hasan Askari and Muhammed Ismail- Imran Jaka pitted against Chandna to win 20-10 and raised their score to 120 VPs sufficient to occupy third berth and Allana finished fourth with a score of 116 VPs.

Makeshift, with A.K.Bhurgari, Mustafa Saif, S.M.Ozair, Afzal Shaikh and Azher Hasan came from behind and finished fifth with a score of 116 VPs due to number of matches won in the seven-round Swiss Movement.—APP
