Mateen extends Abbas

KARACHI, June 23: Fancied Abbas Raza was taken to the full distance by Mateen Arif in the Caltex Open Juniors U-18 clash at Modern Club on Monday.

Abbas easily took the first set 6-3 but Mateen took the match to the distance claiming the second set by the identical margin. However the class of Abbas proved decisive in the final set as he overwhelmed his opponent to snatch the set and the match 6-2.

Another match that was stretched in the same event was the clash between Sher Rehman and Amir Diwan which ended in victory for the former 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.

Mens singles first round: Hammad Shoeb bt Ahmed Husain 6-0, 6-0; Danish Ahmed bt Salman Mnia 6-3, 6-2; Adnan Zaki walk over M.Z.Khatak

Juniors U-18 first round:

Robin Das bt Salman 6-0, 6-3; S.M. Naeem bt Ahmed Husain 6-3, 6-0; Danish bt Ali Asghar 6-1, 6-0; Mustafa Ali bt Ahmed Umsan 6-0, 6-0; Sher Rehman bt Amir Diwan 6-3, 1-6, 6-2; Hammad Shoeb bt Atiq Qasim 6-1, 6-0; Hassan Ahmed bt Salman Ahmed 6-3, 6-3; S.M. Abbas bt Mateen Arif 6-3, 3-6, 6-2.
