Delhi test-fires Trishul

Published June 24, 2003

BHUBANESWAR, June 23: India again test-fired its homegrown short-range surface-to-air Trishul missile from Orissa on Monday.

The Trishul missile was test-fired “successfully” from a mobile launcher, according to an official at the test range at Chandipur.

It was also test-fired from the same site on Sunday.

The missile — one of the five developed by India’s Defence Research and Development Organization since 1983 — is powered by solid fuel and can deliver a 15-kilogram warhead up to nine kilometres away, it said.

The missile is being develo-ped for the army, navy and air force.

The test came amid reports the Indian government was scrapping the development of the Trishul as its guidance system did not work. —AFP
