HARRISON, New York, June 21: South African Retief Goosen closed the gap on overnight leader Briny Baird to one stroke with a five-under-par 66 in the second round of the $5 million Buick Classic on Friday.
Baird, who led by three shots after a career-low 63 in the opening round, carded a 69 for a 10-under total of 132, one ahead of Goosen and two clear of Skip Kendall (66). Joey Sindelar (69) was in fourth place on 135.
World number one Tiger Woods (69), Japan’s Shigeki Maruyama (69), JL Lewis (68), Brad Faxon (67), Jonathan Kaye (66) and Tom Gillis (65) were all on 136, six under, at Westchester Country Club.
Baird, whose best performance in four years on the PGA Tour was a second-place finish at the 2001 John Deere Classic, had seven birdies on Friday but also recorded three bogeys and a double bogey.
The 31-year-old American is back on more familiar ground because he had never previously held the 18-hole lead.
Goosen, the 2001 U.S. Open champion, was one-over for the first eight holes but then eagled the par-five ninth for the second straight round. He also added four birdies on the back nine.

DANE MASTERS COURSE
GLENEAGLES, (Scotland): Soren Kjeldsen made a bid to open Denmark’s account on this year’s European Tour by taking the lead in the Diageo championship, but high winds and the PGA Centenary course again dominated.
Kjeldsen is one of only four players to beat 70 this week, his four-under-par 68 earning him a one-shot second-round lead over Britain’s former Ryder Cup player Paul Broadhurst, who also carded 68.
Dutchman Rolf Muntz and Australian Brad Kennedy are two strokes behind.
But while the leaders escaped relatively unscathed it was not the case for the brunt of the field as the cut-off rose with the disruptive weather of the first two days and fearsome rough on a course that will stage the 2014 Ryder Cup.—Reuters
