Proposal for joint team
MUMBAI, June 21: Saurav Ganguly, Rahul Dravid, Virender Sehwag, Mohammed Kaif, Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh and Pathiv Patel have all verbally agreed to play in the proposed Sahara Peace Cup — an exhibition match which will feature a joint Indo-Pak cricket team against the Rest of the World.
Depending on the BCCI’s permission, the match could take place on August 15 in the UK.
“Cricket has the power to unite the world and there is no better platform than to use India and Pakistan as two nations to unite and play in the same team,” said Shailendra Singh, MD, Percept D’Mark.
The team will comprise twelve Indian and Pakistani players — the final eleven of six-five from each country will depend on the toss. The proceeds of the game will go towards the widows of Kargil victims.
But the BCCI is yet to give the go-ahead for the event.
“We do need the BCCI’s sanction and we’re hoping it comes through. We’ve been pursuing it and requesting them. We’re reaching the stage of pleading them to allow the game to happen because but all we’re asking the BCCI is to allow these six players to feature in the game,” said Singh.—PPI
