LAHORE, June 21: Chief coaches of the Faisalabad and Lahore regional academies agree that six-week duration is not enough to polish players for international cricket, but it is sufficient to remove the basic flaws of the trainees.
Former Test paceman Aaqib Javed, chief coach of Faisalabad Academy, said that the boys had been trained in the basic departments of the game.
Aaqib pointed out that some players learn a lot while others fail to impress at all.
He said that basic purpose of the regional academies was to overcome the shortcomings of the players in the basic techniques and the purpose had been achieved to a large extent. But to prepare a formidable international cricketer was a long process.
He said that if the boys maintained the practice at home which they had been doing in the academy, the investment on them would pay off.
He said that out of 24 students, five showed consistency in performance during the academy session.
They are batsmen Shahid Yousuf and Bilal Azmat, fast bowlers Aamir Yousuf and Imran Ali Pasha and leg-spinner Mansoor Amjad.
Mansoor, who represented Pakistan in the last U-15 Asia Cup) in the UAE recently, also attended the national training camp for seniors but failed to impress.
Aaqib claimed that if all goes well, Shahid and Bilal would get places in the national team in the next two or three years.
Shahid Aslam, chief coach of Lahore Academy, said that during the past six weeks, said that a two-year period required to groom a player for international cricket.
He further added that now it was upto to players themselves to keep up the learning process if they want to become international stars.
Shahid said that out of 25 students at his academy, three were sidelined because of injuries. They were Zain Shahnawaz, Ali Zahid and Hafiz Aamir.
Shahid was impressed with batsmen Nasir Jamshed and Jahangir Mirza, all-rounder Salman Qadir (son of leg-spin legend Abdul Qadir), spinners Sohail Ahmed and Safeer, wicket-keeper Adnan Akmal and pacers Jamshed Ahmed and Wahab Riaz.
