KARACHI: Pakistan be declared multi-nation state: JSM

By Our Staff Reporter

KARACHI, June 18: The Jeay Sindh Mahaz (JSM) has called for declaring Pakistan a ‘multi-nations state’ wherein sovereign power is vested in people.

Speaking at a ceremony, held on Tuesday at PMA House to mark the foundation day of the Jeay Sindh movement, the Mahaz leaders declared that the present federal setup had failed to deliver the goods.

The function was presided over JSM chairman Abdul Khalique Junejo. Amanullah Sheikh, one of the founding members of the Jeay Sindh Movement, Khan Mohammad Boyu, General Secretary of JSM, Yusuf Mustikhan of Pakistan Workers Party, Advocate Mumtaz and Saleem Shahani were among those addressed the participants.

They criticized the ‘oppressive’ policies adopted by the successive governments and said these policies were aimed at subjugating the people of smaller federating units.

They were of the view that the people of Sindh, under the system, been deprived of their political, cultural and economic rights.

Describing the water problem in province as ‘very serious’, they lamented that despite hue and cry the rulers were paying no heed to the people’s grievances.

Deploring civil and military bureaucracy, they said that their dominating role in the political and economic realm had led to the prevailing multi-dimensional crisis which could not be overcome unless restoration of people’s legitimate rights was ensured.

The speakers paid tributes to G. M. Syed, the founder of Jeay Sindh Movement, for his commitment to the cause of Sindh who devoted his life to liberate Sindhi people.

Yusuf Mustikhan said time had come for the nationalist forces to reassess their role amid fast changing national and international scenario.

Referring to the developments in Afghanistan, Iraq and the struggle of Palestinians, he said the US imperialism was bent upon destroying the nationalist states while the Americans trying to impose their own brand of world order on sovereign countries.

Terming the US spree a ‘challenge’, he deplored that the strong and rich states who had been opposing the US designs, were now supporting the US aggressive policies on the pretext of fighting the so-called global terrorism.

In his concluding remarks, Abdul Khalique Junejo said the Mahaz had always worked for the unity of Sindhi people and welcomed moves for an alliance of like-minded nationalist parties.

However, he stressed, unity of different groups must be based on principles and not opportunism.

He described feudal lords and terrorists as two destructive elements who destroyed Sindh and now preventing unity of nationalist forces.

The JSM leader dispelled the impression that his party opposed a democratic system. “We want real and greater democracy for people,” he clarified and added that real democracy could be established only by recognizing rights of the people of all nationalities which, he opined, could not be done under the present arrangement.
