DADU, June 17: On the call of the Anti-Greater Thal Canal Action Committee (AGTCAC), token hunger strikes were observed all over Sindh on Tuesday to protest against the construction of the controversial canal.

A large number of political and NGO activists staged a rally here to protest against the construction of the controversial canal.

The protesters — including the activists of the People’s Party Parliamentarians, Jeay Sindh Qaumi Mahaz, Sindh Taraqqi Pasand Party, Awami Tehrik and different NGOs — after marching on main roads of the city, arrived in front of the Dadu Press Club where they held a demonstration for half an hour, blocking the road and suspending vehicular traffic.

Later, they also observed a token hunger strike.

SUKKUR: Hundreds of activists of different political parties, on the call of the anti-Thal canal action committee, took out a procession and observed a hunger strike here against construction of the Thal canal.

The protesters observed a hunger strike in front of the Sukkur Press Club and demanded that work on the Thal canal project should immediately be stopped.

They deplored that the Sindh Assembly had adopted a unanimous resolution and the people of the province had been raising their voice against the Thal canal but the government was continuing with the project.

They demanded that the money being spent on the project should be utilized for resolving problems of Sindh, including that of water shortage.

LARKANA: Supporters of the AGTCAC observed a token hunger strike at the Jinnahbagh here.

The protesters raised slogans of “go Musharraf go” and against construction of the Thal canal.

Workers of the PPP, SNF, PPP-SB, AT, STPP and JSQP observed hunger strike.

Token hunger strikes were also observed in different towns of the district.

NAWABSHAH: Supporters of the AGTCAC observed a token hunger strike outside the local press club to express their anger over the construction of the Thal canal.

Activists of the Muttahida Majlis-i-Amal, Pakistan Muslim League-N, PPP, STPP and AT participated in the hunger strike.

THATTA: Leaders and activists of component parties of the AGTCAC observed token hunger strikes against the controversial canal project in the nine taluka headquarters of Thatta district.

Venues of the protest included Thatta, Mirpur Bathoro, Mirpur Sakro, Jati, Ghorabari, Sujawal and Daro.

SHIKARPUR: On the call of the AGTCAC, a token hunger strike was observed by the activists of different political parties and nationalist groups outside the local press club to protest against the construction of the disputed canal.

KHAIRPUR: Scores of the PPP workers of Faiz Ganj taluka held a protest demonstration in Pakka Chang on Tuesday against the construction of the greater Thal canal.

They marched on the main roads, held a demonstration and later also observed a token hunger strike.

BADIN: On the call of the AGTCAC, activists of different parties observed a token hunger strike here on Tuesday.

The activists of the PPP, PPP-SB, AT, STPP, JSQM, PML-N, MMA and Sindh National Front participated the strike.

NAUSHAHRO FEROZE: The activists of the PPP observed a token hunger strike against the Thal canal project outside the local press club.

JACOBABAD: The activists of the AGTCAC component parties took out a procession here on Tuesday in protest against the construction of the greater Thal canal.

The protesters, including women, were carrying placards and banners and terming the project unacceptable to Sindh.

M IRPURKHAS: Over 100 people observed a token hunger strike at the Post Office Chowk here to protest against construction of the Thal canal. PPP MNAs Pir Aftab Hussain Shah Jilani and Syed Qurban Ali Shah also participated in the protest.
