China tram kills 14 coal miners

BEIJING, June 16: Fourteen coal miners were killed when a steel rope controlling the descent of a 25-degree slope came free from the tram car in the Jianghu coal mine in the southern Guangdong province of China, an official said on Monday.

Apart from the 14 victims, twelve miners also received injuries and three were struggling for their lives in a hospital, the official said.

China has the biggest mining industry. 7,000 people were killed in mine accidents last year. The cause of the Jianghu accident is under investigation.—Reuters
