KARACHI, June 15: As predicted in these columns, Rahat Sultan’s bay horse Khas Ul Khas with jockey M. Mazhar once again in the saddle, galloped to his fifth successive victory, beating Sapno Ki Rani by three lengths, in the main event at the Summer Gymkhana Race Meeting held on Sunday at the Karachi Race Course.
The task was made all the more easier, when main challenger Chachu’s Dream partnered by Sajjid Hussain, disinclined to take up the challenge and finished a miserable fourth behind Order Of The Day.
Sajjid paid heavily for his mischievous performance in the saddle and had his licence revoked for six months by the Stewards.
Chachu’s Dream won her last two meetings like a champion under her old name Late Shama. Running under her new name and on the hat-trick trail, the bay filly after a late start never seemed interested to take on the challenge of Khas Ul Khas after she was backed soundly in the betting ring by a host of racing fans.
But the punishment meted out to Sajjid’s older brother Tariq Mehmood riding M.R. Hussain’s bay nine-year-old horse Clever Cat left a deep scar against the judgement of the Stewards.
Participating in the second race won by the bay horse Dauntless, making it two wins in row for owner Mrs. Yasmin K. Khan, Clever Cat was running amongst the front runners till the bend. But turning for home, he went wide thus losing precious ground. Tariq in the meantime had a hectic time trying to get his horse back into contention but valuable time was lost in this endeavour and Clever Cat finished off the board.
Certain influential individuals who had backed the horse for a place chance were furious and immediately informed the Stewards that Clever Cat was not on the job, little realising the plight of Tariq Mehmood in the saddle.
Without a shadow of hesitation, the stewards fined Tariq Rs.20000, and suspended the rider for six months. This was indeed a cruel blow for the rider who is presently perched on top in the jockeys championship table with 15 winners against his name. His main rivals riders M. Mazhar, Muzaffar Hussain and Tariq Baran are joint second with 11 winners apiece.
Trainer Sullah finished the afternoon’s programme with a good double through Grey Boy in the first event after Ghulam Shabbir II replaced the original rider at the starting gate. Sullah’s next triumph came in the fourth race through the bay horse Auzy smartly ridden by Nadir Abdullah, ending the pretensions of Sajan Black in the fourth race of the afternoon.
The roan four-year-old colt Your Pleasure with Kashif Ali astride, improved his performance by four lengths, while picking up the spoils in the third race, beating Sovero and National Lining on the way to the winning post. No questions were asked for the remarkable improvement by four lengths and that too within a week’s time. Some food for thought.
Satellite Star with Zubair Ahmed aboard, won the fifth race, beating Sonia by a handsome margin of seven lengths, after the dark bay horse Rajwar after a marvellous run last week, decided to play truant which left a majority of the racing fans with burning fingers.
The gentlemen in the Glass Room never even inquired from the owner for the in and out running of Rajwar, which seems to be the order of the day with most owners nowadays.
The following event was won by Roberto Carlos Fan with jockey Asghar in the saddle, sprinting in from behind to collar Blue’s Night 100 yards from the winning post.
Our racing column came out on top once again with five winners predicted in seven events. Grey Boy, Dautless, Auzy, Roberto Carlos Fan and Khas Ul Khas obliged our readers in the first, second, third, sixth and concluding events.
Our fancy National Lining in the third event finish third behind our third best Your Pleasure and Sovero. The fifth race was won by Satellite Star, after our top two fancied runners Champion Lady and Nawab were withdrawn from the race.
