ISLAMABAD, June 15: The Supreme Court of Pakistan has disposed of 6,112 petitions and appeals from January 1 to June 13, 2003.
This was disclosed by the Supreme Court registrar after a full court meeting held here at the SC building on Saturday.
Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Sheikh Riaz Ahmed presided over the meeting, which reviewed the prevailing pendency and disposal of petitions and appeals situation in the Supreme Court during the first six months of the current year.
The meeting observed that there were 17,529 cases pending in the court on January 1, 2003 and later another 5,480 fresh cases were filed upto June 13, 2003. Out of these, 6,112 cases were disposed of during the six-month period leaving 16,897 cases lying pending.
According to the registry-wise pendency and disposal record, Islamabad has the maximum number of pending cases, about 10,695 during this period out of which 2,906 were disposed off. Now there are 7,789 cases lying pending in Islamabad.
In the Lahore Bench of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, there were 9,808 cases pending out of which 2,919 were disposed of with 6,889 cases on the pendency list as on June 14, 2003.
In the Peshawar Bench, there were 1,044 cases during the period out of which 156 were disposed of and 888 remained pending.
The Karachi Bench has disposed of 131 case out of a total 1,245 and the pendency list showed 1,114 cases. The Quetta Bench had 217 cases during this period and none could be disposed of uptil June 13, 2003 and the same number were showed against the current pendency list.
“The court also reviewed various provisions of Supreme Court Rules, 1980, and approved certain amendments therein which had become necessary with the passage of time,” the SC registrar said.
