600 teachers transferred

By Our Correspondent

GILGIT, June 11: The Northern Areas education department has transferred with immediate effect at least 600 teachers including 49 headmasters in a major reshuffle to ensure ‘strict’ discipline in schools.

A source in the department said that the step had been taken to desist teachers from involvment in the local politics and also to place a check on the falling academic standards in the schools.

A large number of teachers were stationed in Gilgit and performed duties in various schools but they drew their salaries from the schools situated in the rural areas, the source said. “As the teachers have started taking part in politics and failed to impart their duties, they have been transferred to their actual duty stations”, the source added.
