LAHORE, June 9: Eight people, including two women, were killed and 39 others injured on Monday in a head-on collision between a bus and a trailer on the Multan Road in Chuhng.

The driver of the bus, two men, two women and a child were among those who were killed in the accident. They were later identified as Abdul Ghafoor, Zulfiqar, Iqbal, Baqir, Naila, Sadaf and Sughra Bibi.

Chuhng DSP Omar Farooq Bhatti told Dawn that the bus was on its way to Lahore from Bahawalpur, carrying 47 passengers. He said that the bus had collided as it tried to violate the one-way traffic, because of the ongoing road construction work, before entering Lahore.

Passersby and local residents had rushed to rescue passengers from the bus wreckage. Later, they were joined by police and volunteers of other civic agencies.

The injured were later shifted to nearby hospitals.

Quoting hospital sources, police officials said that 13 other passengers were in critical condition.

The deceased’s bodies were later handed over to their respective families.
