LAHORE, June 9: The Punjab health department has reportedly sent a report to the chief minister saying that the performance of majority of principal executive officers (PEOs) serving in autonomous medical and health institutions in the province is not satisfactory.

The report has been sent to the chief minister prior to the implementation of the Punjab Medical and Health Institutions Act, 2003. The law awaits governor’s signatures.

The act abolishes the board of governors as well as the posts of PEOs and requires the constitution of 10-member boards of management and selection of principals.

As all the PEOs are expected to vie for the posts of principals, the department has reported to the CM that a majority of them were not suitable for the posts of principals as they lacked managerial qualities.

It is learnt that the health department had also reported that the majority of PEOs could not even utilize the sanctioned budgets and surrendered substantial funds. The report said that the majority of PEOs were unable to settle managerial problems in their respective institutions.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the Punjab government has appointed Prof Shahnaz Javed as PEO of PGMI/Services Hospital.

Sources say that Prof Shahnaz will continue as principal/dean of the Postgraduate Medical Institute till her retirement after eight months.

“The post of PGMI principal/dean will not be advertised along with the posts of principals of all other autonomous medical colleges and institutes. The post will be advertised after her retirement,” they said. — MANSOOR MALIK
