Strike The Gold dream run ends

KARACHI, June 8: The dream run of Strike The Gold ended on Sunday when she was beaten soundly by Shoukat Awan’s thoroughbred four-year-old bay filly Shama, over the sprinting distance of five furlongs at the Karachi Racecourse.

Ridden by Tariq Mehmood, the Silver Lining - Hello Venza sibling took over the running from Strike The Gold just half a furlong from the starting gate and never presenting any anxious moments to her band of supporters, Shama went on to win the race by three lengths, chased all the way to the winning post by Strike The Gold with Order Of The Day grabbing the third spot with nine runners in the field.

Shama trained by seasoned Mohammad Rafiq registered her second win on the trot preventing Strike The Gold from completing her hattrick of victories.

A race earlier, Rahat Sultan’s seven-year-old bay horse Khas Ul Khas sped to his fourth successive victory, with Burning Sky following in his wake seven lengths behind. Former champion jockey M. Mazhar rode the winner for the third time in a row. Jockey Imamdin was in the saddle when Khas Ul Khas won his first race. In another race which provided plenty of thrills to the racing fans, Shah Mardan Shah II, Pir Pagaro VII’s six-year-old bay mare Fire Of Desire, sprinted from behind to collar Bold Commander 100 yards from the winning post in the concluding event. Also flying in from behind was Donatello with Khalid Nawaz aboard ousting Dur Yamen, leading the field at one stage of the race but finishing fourth.

Partnered once again by Sher Mohammad, Fire Of Desire made it two winners in a row for the Pagaro stables.

The first race of the afternoon was won by Even Top ridden by veteran Nadir Abdullah, beating nearest rival Super Boy by six lengths with Lucky Love and Law Of Nature completing the frame. The spoils in the next event was picked up by Rukhsar, beating Dauntless by just 3/4 of a length with Prism Of Life grabbing the third spot from the raging favourite Mera Sulman.

Trying to make every post a winning one, Mera Sulman ran out of steam half a furlong from the winning post.

Edward Chou’s chestnut colt Yaqoob Choice never let the connections down, sprinting home to victory in the third race with Murad Ali in the saddle.

The crowd fancy National Lining partnered by Khalid Nawaz tried his level best to catch up with Yaqoob Choice, but all his efforts were in vain.

Dr. Dre with jockey M. Yousuf holding the reins, scored another triumph for Syed Ali Gohar Shah, beating nearest rival Sonia by 5 1/4 lengths.

Ustadon Ka Ustad partnered once again by jockey Arshad trailed the field even after receiving a severe warning from the Stewards.

Arshad paid the penalty after being reprimanded and had his licence revoked for a three month period, not to mention being penalised for a sum of Rs.20,000. Hats off to you gentlemen in the Glass Room.

Roberto Carlos Fan, the six-year-old bay horse now in the training of Mohayuddin, gave his band of supporters something to cheer about at last, winning the fifth race after being engaged in a keen duel with Rajwar in the home stretch.

After several disappointments, Roberto Carlos Fan ridden by Asghar Ali, won the race by a whisker from Rajwar, after both runners passed the winning post in a photo-finish.

The next race meeting is scheduled for Sunday, June 15.
