MIRPURKHAS, June 8: The Mirpurkhas Sugar Mill has become a defaulter of millions of rupees of sugarcane growers but the government has not taken any action against it under the Sugarcane Act.
This was stated by a group of growers of Mirpurkhas Taluka, who were led by Mohammad Moosa Mahar, while talking to newsmen at the Mirpurkhas Press Club on Sunday.
They said that the mill management was a defaulter as it did not pay millions of rupees to the growers despite the lapsing of four months and under the Sugarcane Act the sugar mills are bound to pay within a week.
They said that on account of non-payment of their dues they had themselves become borrowers of banks, financial institutions and other individuals, and added that they were unable to invest money in agriculture as their money was stuck up in the sugar mill.
They regretted that they had not received payments for February and March.
They lamented that delay in payment to them by the sugar mill was devastating the agriculture sector.
They demanded that President Gen Pervez Musharraf and the Sindh chief minister ensure payment to them immediately.
ACCIDENT: An unidentified boy was hit by a vehicle on a section of the Umerkot-Mirpurkhas road, near Sahib Dino, Sehto village, on Saturday night as a result of which he died on the spot.
TWO INJURED: A villager, Manak Leghari, and his son, Roshan Leghari, were seriously injured by three men — Hyder Bux Leghari, Dhani Bux Leghari and A. Bachayo Leghari — in an armed attack in the Mevo Leghari village, Mirpurkhas Taluka, on Sunday.
Both were taken to the Civil Hospital. Their condition is stated to be precarious.
The accused escaped. The Taluka police have registered a case against them.
