Qamar tipped to break new world record

By Our Sports Correspondent

LAHORE, June 7: Qamar Hussain is expected to set a new world record in the 82.5 kgs event of the forthcoming World Junior Powerlifting Championship to be held in Warsaw, Poland from Sept 4 to 9.

This was stated by Pakistan Powerlifting Federation (PPF) secretary, Malik Mohammad Rashid, while talking to Dawn on Saturday.

Rashid, said that the world record was 330 kgs in that event and Qamar had lifted 320 kgs in the ongoing training camp which has been set up at the Punjab University Old Campus to pick and prepare the team for the World competition.

The PPF secretary said, Qamar, who had clinched a gold medal in the last Asian Junior contest held at Almaty, Kazakhstan in April-May this year, had his weight of 79.5 kgs.

That means he has the capacity to increase three kgs to his weight which would be enough to lift a weight more than of 330 kgs to shatter the existing record.

Rashid said that he was also hopeful for the world record because Qamar had lifted 283 kgs in the training camp held for the Almaty’s event and he managed to pick up 300 kgs there.

He said that gold medals were also expected from Imran Khalid and Adeel Rana in Poland.

Imran put up a marvellous performance at Almaty, winning seven gold medals in the 100 kgs class. Adeel also earned one gold in that championship.

He said that Pakistani powerlifters had established supremacy in the dead lift event of the game ending the grip of India in that event.

The secretary pointed out that ten probables had been attending the national training camp.

The trials to pick up Pakistan team for the World contest will be held on July 30.

The national selection committee headed by PPF president Khawaja Muhammad Asif will watch the trials.

Hafiz Imran Butt is the coach of the camp while Mushtaq Ahmad is his assistant. Muhammad Khalid Chaudhary is acting as camp-commandant.

Probables: Sheraz Butt (Punjab), Adeel Rana (Wapda), Qadeer  Akram (Punjab), Qamar Hussain (Wapda), Muhammad Imran Khalid (Wapda), Aamir Hussain (Punjab), Khalid Nazir (Punjab), Kamran Ashraf (Punjab), Sohail Qamar (Punjab), Syed Wajahat Hussain (Punjab).
