PESHAWAR, June 6: The NWFP government on Friday suspended three police officials for demolishing signboards showing pictures of women by a political party’s activists in the city two weeks ago.

The Gulbahar police had registered an FIR against eight Jamaat-i-Islami and Shabab-i-Milli leaders on May 24, but the police did not arrest any of them, sources said.

The government suspended SP city Zafarullah Khan, SDPO Gulbahar Abdul Kalam and SHO Gulbahar Abdul Samad under the NWFP Removal from Services (Special Powers) Ordinance, 2000.

Also, the government transferred SP Cantonment Sajjad Afzal Afridi.

The city police on Friday sought government permission to arrest eight JI leaders and activists.

Those nominated in the FIR are Jamshed Munir, Tariq Mateen, Sirajuddin Qureshi, Haji Dost Mohammad, Maulana Masih Gul, Niaz Ali, Khaliq Ahmad Saeed and Khalid Gul.

FACTORY FIRE: Three people were injured when Khyber Match Factory, Hayatabad, caught fire, apparently due to short circuit on Thursday night.

The injured were rushed to Hayatabad Medical Complex. The fire caused a loss of more then Rs100,000 to the factory.
