MIRPURKHAS, June 3: The members of the district council here on Monday adopted a unanimous resolution calling upon irrigation officials to implement the rotation programme and close canals for one week every month, if it was required on account of water shortage.

They also accused irrigation officials of mismanagement in water distribution and corruption.

Some of the members including Jafar Kalro, Mir Fateh Khan and Akbar Dars regretted that presently there was no need of the rotation programme because water was being supplied in the Nara canal as per its designed capacity.

They demanded that the government introduce rotation programme when there was shortage of water in the river.

Mir Fateh Khan complained that irrigation officials were involved in corruption and were mainly responsible for mismanagement of distribution of water in the command area of the Nara canal.

He claimed that the distributaries of Umerkot sub-division were not getting their due share.

He demanded that the sub-division’s distributaries be supplied water properly.

Ghulam Hussain Samejo drew the attention of the chair towards the drought-like conditions in 25 Dehs of Umerkot Taluka.

He demanded that measures be taken for providing relief. He also demanded that wheat be provided on nominal rates to the people.

The district council called upon President Gen Pervez Musharraf not to accept the resignations of district Nazims of the NWFP rather redress their grievances, failing which it would be a severe blow to the district government system.

The members, Mehboob Mari and Ameer Hassan Khan Qaim Khani, said that the district government system has been helpful in solving the people’s problems at the grass-roots level.

Mirza Masroor Beg proposed that the government should devise a clear policy on how to run the present system.
