India tests short-range missile

NEW DELHI, June 2: India test-fired a short-range, surface-to-air missile on Monday, its third in five days, a defence ministry spokesman said.

The missile, called Akash (sky), can hit targets up to 25 km away and can carry a payload of 55 kg.

It was fired from a launchpad in Chandipur on India’s eastern seaboard. “These are routine developmental trials,” the spokesman said, adding the missile had been tested last Thursday and Saturday as well.—Reuters
