Palestinian PM arrives in Jordan

AMMAN, June 1: Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmud Abbas arrived on Sunday in Jordan for talks with his Jordanian counterpart on the preparations for the US-Palestinian-Israeli summit which the kingdom hosts this week.

Palestinian and Jordanian officials said Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, was due to meet with Ali Abu Ragheb later in the evening and would leave on Monday for Egypt, which is hosting on Tuesday a US-Arab summit.

“Abu Mazen will have discussions with Prime Minister Abu Ragheb about the two summits as part of the constant consultations between the two countries,” Palestinian diplomat Atallah Khairi told AFP.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II hosts on Wednesday a summit between US President George W. Bush, Mahmud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, aimed at relaunching the Palestinian-Israeli peace process. The groundbreaking meeting expected to consecrate the US-backed international “roadmap” peace initiative will be held under high security at Aqaba.
