SSP man among six awarded death

GUJRANWALA, May 31: The sessions court on Saturday awarded death sentence to six people, including banned Sipah-i-Sahaba Pakistan’s former divisional president, life imprisonment to three others and Rs1 million collective fine.

The court sentenced to death SSP former Divisional President Rana Ghulam Sarwar and fined him Rs100,000, and handed down life term and Rs50,000 fine to his associate, Muhammad Shabbir.

The convicts will have to undergo six-month rigorous imprisonment in case of default of payment.

According to the prosecution, the convicts had killed Dhulley union council Nazim Rana Muhammad Husain over monetary dispute at Model Town on Jan 1 this year.

Meanwhile, the court handed down death sentence to four people, Sohail Akhtar, Muhammad Ilyas, Gulfam and Muhammad Abbas, and fined them Rs400,000. Life term and Rs100,000 fine was awarded to Arif.

The convicts had killed Saghir Ahmad and his mother Kaneez Bibi at Satellite Town during a robbery bid on Nov 26, 2001.

The court also awarded death sentence and Rs100,000 fine to Jehanzeb in a murder case. The court directed him to pay another Rs200,000 to the deceased’s family.

Jehanzeb had killed Sajjad at Maraliwala village on Dec 27, 2000.

The court also awarded life term and Rs50,000 fine to Muhammad Boota for killing Muhammad Rafiq alias Siddiq at Ladheywala Warriach village two years ago.

CLERKS’ STRIKE: The All Pakistan Clerks Association and the low-paid employees of all the government and semi-government departments went on a strike on Saturday to press their demands.

Speaking at a meeting here, APCA Divisional President Tahir Mahmood Bhatti announced that the clerical staff would continue its strike till its demands were not met.

The protesters also demanded that their salaries should be increased in proportion to price raise.
