Windies put brakes on Australia

ST GEORGES,(Grenada), May 30: Australia squandered a blazing start to finish with 252 off 50 overs after winning the toss in the sixth and penultimate one-day international against the West Indies at Queen’s Park here on Friday.

The World Cup champions, leading the series 4-1, began with an imperious 90-run stand between Adam Gilchrist and Matthew Hayden off 14.2 overs before they threw away wickets with sloppy batting.

The Australians lost nine wickets for 147 and only reached 252 and five runs an over through prodigious hitting by number eight Andy Bichel with 41 off 40 balls, which included two sixes and three fours.

Gilchrist looked in ominous touch with a thunderous 64 off 66 deliveries. His clean hitting netted him eight boundaries and two sixes before he tried to thrash spinner Marlon Samuels through point and was snapped up chest-high by Brian Lara.

Skipper Ricky Ponting looked scratchy before he attempted a suicide single and was run out by Lara for two and Andrew Symonds, Australia’s leading scorer in the series, was guilty of a casual attempted flick through mid-wicket to give Lara an easy catch for 16.

Darren Lehmann, back from a calf muscle injury, looked composed in his 43 off 53 balls before he was caught and bowled by Chris Gayle.

Gayle also claimed another caught and bowled to dismiss Jimmy Maher for 19 and had Bichel taken on the boundary rope for Lara’s third catch of the innings.

Gayle finished the best of the West Indian bowlers with 3-37 off 10 overs with Samuels taking 2-39 off 10 overs and paceman Corey Collymore 2-46 off 10 overs.

Grenada has hosted just five ODIs and a solitary Test since the new stadium was opened in 1999, and there is an air of expectation ahead of the two matches.

Public Officers with tickets for Friday’s game have permission to take the day off, and all schools are being given a day-off.

KING TO PLAY IN S. AFRICA

GEORGETOWN (Guyana), May 30: Former West Indies fast bowler Reon King has been signed by South African provincial team Northern Titans for 2003/04 cricket season.

King played 14 Tests and 48 ODIs for West Indies between 1999 and 2001. He made promising start in both forms of the game, taking 44 Test wickets at average of 27.8 and 73 ODI wickets at average of 23.2.

King said “I am extremely delighted to be given opportunity to be part of Titans professional unit for 2003-04 South African cricket season.

“I am certainly looking forward to meeting players, staff, friends, and fans of Titans - of which all will certainly add to development of my all round cricketing acumen, and ultimately success of Titans.

“This opportunity will also no doubt boost my chances of restarting my Test career that actually started at home of Titans - SuperSport Park in 1998-99!”

Dave Nosworthy, Titans coach was confident King will add tremendous value in ensuring that many young local players will progress to highest level, in tradition of other West Indian professional cricketers, who have similarly nurtured local young talent in South Africa.—Agencies
