KARACHI: Water most pressing issue, says Mumtaz

KARACHI, May 30: Chairman of Sindh National Front Mumtaz Ali Bhutto on Friday said that while acute water shortage had already forced the people of Sindh to take to the streets, sanctioning of funds for the Greater Thal Canal, more dams upstream, Kachchi Canal and Reni Canal could bring unbearable miseries to them.

His remarks came in his letter addressed to Prime Minister Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali.

Mr Bhutto termed the water shortage problem ‘more alarming than lawlessness, crime and corruption’ that prevailed in the province Sindh. While Punjab boasts of record crops, almost a quarter of Sindh has turned barren as only dust clouds hovers over the riverbed of dry Indus, he pointed out.

“The explanation that these canals are flood canals is totally meaningless as Chashma, Jhelum and Taunsa link canals are also flood canals, which Punjab uses at its will particularly during water shortage periods,” he observed.

The SNF chief said that street protest by the people of Sindh should not be ignored.

He urged the PM to take notice of the situation immediately.—PPI
