German soldier killed in Kabul

KABUL, May 29: One German peacekeeping soldier was killed and another injured when their vehicle drove over a mine in Kabul, a spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said on Thursday.

“One German soldier was killed and another one injured,” when their vehicle made contact with the explosive device at around 1pm (0830 GMT), Lieutenant Colonel Paul Kolken said.

The blast occurred 15 kilometres south of the main ISAF base, Camp Warehouse, in southeast Kabul, he said.

It was not immediately known whether it was old mine or a new deliberately placed one, Kolken said.

An investigation was under way and next of kin had not yet been informed, he added.

No further details were immediately available.—AFP
