LAHORE, May 29: Pakistan coach Javed Miandad has not yet signed a contract with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) since both parties have reservations on some aspects.
Miandad rejoined the national team as coach on March 20, 2003 and is now going to England on his third assignment, but both PCB and the coach have failed to reach an agreement over pay.
“Yes, I have not signed any contract with PCB, but I am hopeful the matter will be solved before the team’s departure for England,” Miandad told Dawn on Thursday.
Miandad, however, was unwillingness to explain the reasons which were creating problems in signing a contract with the PCB.
“There are some other reasons except that of money. I have no lust for money and more important dear to me are dignity and honour. I did not take a single rupee from PCB since rejoining the team as coach and that is enough evidence I am not running behind money,” he said.
Miandad said that he had a short meeting with PCB chairman Lt Gen Tauqir Zia on this subject. “I am awaiting a reply from PCB in the light of my meeting with the chairman.”
When asked will he prefer a similar contract under which he had worked with PCB in the past, Miandad said: “That was a good package and I have no objection against that.”
The former Pakistan captain had been receiving remuneration on match to match basis, equal to a senior player’s match fee. But his predecessors, Mudassar Nazar and Richard Pybus, were paid on a daily basis. Mudassar received a total amount of about Rs 8.8 million for an eight-month stint while Pybus received 300 pounds per day.
Miandad disclosed that after the World Cup he received three offers of coaching from abroad, but he preferred the national team, because it was his duty to deliver the goods for the nation.
When asked if he agreed with the selection of the team announced for the England’s tour, Miandad diplomatically ducked that question and stated that his only job was to coach the boys and not select them.
“The team selection is the job of the national selection committee and finalising the playing XI is the responsibility of the captain. But I am bound to give advise to both the selectors and the captain if they asked for it,” he remarked.
Miandad parried the question when asked if he was consulted about the technical flaws of opener Imran Nazir before including him in the 16-man team.
Imran had been sidelined before the World Cup as the then selection committee headed by Wasim Bari detected some flaws in his batting. The new committee, led by Aamir Sohail, also did not select Imran for similar reasons for the previous two competitions, but now have opted to give him a chance for the England’s tour, claiming that the player had got rid of those shortcomings.
