HEC finalizes electronic engineering curriculum

ISLAMABAD, May 29: A three-day meeting of National Curriculum Revision Committee (NCRC) of the Higher Education Commission (HEC) for the discipline of electronic engineering concluded at the HEC campus here on Thursday.

The committee considered BSc/BE and MS/ME curricula in electronic engineering. The curricula was formulated by the committee in September 2002 and was circulated to all the universities for their critical review and observation. The committee also considered recommendations of the university- industry relationship Workshop held two weeks back.

Considering the feedback received from various sources, the committee incorporated suitable changes to enhance the potency and focus of this curriculum.

The meeting was chaired by Prof Engr Hyder Ali Khan, Chairman Department of Electronic Engineering, Dawood College of Engineering & Technology, Karachi.

The committee also formulated a set of detailed recommendations envisaging that adoption of this curriculum will enhance the knowledge-base of the Electronic Engineering students and equip them with skill and confidence to find solutions to problems in professional life.

The committee was unanimous in pronouncing that future progress and prosperity of Pakistan was undeniably linked with the country’s self-sufficiency in electronic engineering-related fields.

The committee recommended that final year projects of engineering students should involve analysis, design and practical work. It also recommended that examination for the project should include an open-house formal presentation by the students and efforts should be made to invite representatives from the local industries.

It was also recommended that the teaching faculty should be encouraged to attend short courses, seminars and workshops, which may be locally or internationally arranged by various agencies.

The committee recommended that the total curriculum should spread over four academic years or eight academic semesters. Though it may be the discretion of the university to adopt the suggested courses according to their own setup and suitability.
