HYDERABAD, May 26: The Sindh minister for population, Imtiaz Ahmad Shaikh, has said there is no difference of opinion between the Sindh government and the opposition on the issue of the greater Thal canal.

He was speaking at a public meeting in Tando Jam on Sunday night.

The Sindh Democratic Alliance president called upon the federal government to consider the resolution unanimously adopted by the Sindh Assembly against the Thal canal.

He said construction of the Thal canal would increase the sense of deprivation among the people of the province.

About problems confronting the people, Mr Shaikh said poverty, unemployment and the shortage of water had made the lives of the people miserable.

He said the government was making efforts to resolve problems of the people.

He said the SDA would honour the promises it had made before the election and it would work for the rights of Sindh.

He gave an assurance that he would talk to the Sindh chief minister about the establishment of a higher secondary school in Tando Jam.

Agha Zafarullah Shaheen, Pir Sajjad Jam Sarhandi, Mir Inayat Ali Talpur, Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah and others also spoke at the meeting.

On this occasion, Mir Sher Mohammad Talpur, a noted political figure, announced joining the SDA. Many other people of Tando Jam and Tando Allahyar also announced their support to the party.

HESCO: Employees of Hyderabad Electric Supply Company will be promoted according to seniority list and efforts will be made to regularize the services of daily-wage and off-day employees.

This was decided at a meeting of a five-member delegation of the Pakistan Wapda Hydro Electric Central Labour Union with Hesco chief Tariq Arshad, human resources director Col Hamid Ghaus and administration director Zafar Iqbal, held here on Sunday.

The delegation was led by the president of the Wapda union (CBA), Abdul Latif Nizamani.

A statement issued by the union said it was also decided at the meeting that officers concerned would write annual confidential reports of employees before they were transferred or retired.

The meeting further decided to get the Wapda school affiliated with the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Larkana.

Speaking at the meeting, Hesco chief Arshad said problems of the employees would be resolved.

POLIO: The Polio Eradication Committee of the Latifabad taluka, at a meeting held here on Monday, decided that future anti-polio drives would be launched in more organized manner.

Latifabad Taluka Nazim Abdul Jabbar Khan, who is the chairman of the committee, presided over the meeting.

The meeting expressed satisfaction that polio was under total control in the taluka and resolved to continue preventive measures.
