Shama makes every post a winning one
KARACHI, May 25: Shama, the thoroughbred four-year-old filly, made every post a winning one, sprinting to victory at the Gymkhana Race Meeting held on Sunday afternoon at the Karachi Racecourse.
Having the services of jockey Tariq Mehmood once again in the saddle, the filly trained by Mohammad Rafiq, never let her large band of supporters down this time over the five furlong journey, beating nearest rival Flying Bird by three lengths with plenty to spare. Royal Lancer and Prince Of Arabia completed the frame.
The riding honours however, belonged to jockey Arshad, who piloted Ustadon Ka Ustad, beating the favourite Yaqoob Choice in the third event and then completed his double by riding long shot Nawab to a stunning victory, followed home by stable companion Sonia.
Sharing in the victory celebrations was Kamaluddin, the owner-trainer of both winners.
In this race the favourite Jaguar, led the field into the straight and with only a furlong from the winning post suddenly folded up and finished off the board.
The first race of the afternoon was bagged by Syed Ali Gohar’s Shah bay four-year-old filly Royal Beauty, followed home by Millennium Era, Law Of Nature and Lucky Love.
You Pleasure ridden by Kashif Ali, was a surprise winner in the second event, making a splendid dash half a furlong from home, to nip front runner Mera Sulman at the winning pot.
Riffat Sultan’s seven-year-old bay horse Khas Ul Khas was the most popular winner on the afternoon’s programme, registering a hat-trick of winners for the beaming owner.
After a neck-and-neck tussle for supremacy with Burning sky, the winner forged ahead to win the race by two lengths. Former champion jockey M. Mazhar has partnered Khas Ul Khas on all his three triumphs.
Ali Faisal Farooq’s bay filly Al Chemy registered her second success on the trot, ending the pretensions of High Standard by a handsome margin of seven lengths. Order Of The Day pinched the third spot from Guarantee.
The concluding race was won by Shah Mardan Shah II, Pir Pagaro VII’s bay mare Fire Of Desire ridden by jockey M. Nasir.
After Charkh Bareen was withdrawn from the race now reduced to only five runners, stable companion Donatello with Muzaffar Hussain astride took an early lead but was soon overtaken by Fire Desire.
Entering the straight a neck- and-neck duel began while the two sprinted for the winning post. Half a furlong from home, Donatello near the rails managed to get his head in front but was soon boxed in by Fire Of Desire on the outside, as the two passed the winning post together.
After the race, Muzaffar lodged a protest against the rider of Fire Of Desire that he was interfered with and forced on the railings.
After a lengthy discussion in the Conference Room, the Stewards finally decided to award the race to Fire Of Desire.
