Prisoners protest

QUETTA, May 25: The Mach jail authorities have adopted strict measures after protest by condemned prisoners on Saturday in which three security officials were made hostage.

On Saturday, 126 condemned prisoners had staged a protest and made three guards hostage. However, the situation was brought under control.

Jail officials said the demands of the prisoners, especially to grant interview with visitors openly, could not be entertained in view of the risks involved as some of the prisoners were dangerous.

“We did not allow the protesting prisoners to come out of the death cells for half an hour on Sunday,” the authorities said adding that they were earlier enjoying some relaxation but now the jail manual was being strictly followed.—Correspondent
