KARACHI, May 25: A meeting of the members of the Seaview Residents Society (SRS) has suggested to the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) to initiate a dialogue with the SRS regarding any future planning of the area.
The meeting noted that owners of the Seaview apartments were lawful leaseholders of their flats and the DHA could not take any unilateral decision regarding their property without consulting them.
The SRS has also asked the DHA chief not to talk with other organizations, like Defence Residents Society (DRS), on issues relating to the Seaview apartments.
The SRS said that a substantial number (nearly 25 per cent of the total) of the Seaview residents were the pensioners and it would not be a good idea to dislocate or disturb the senior citizens.
It urged all the residents who could not attend the meeting to join hands and forge unity to foil the attempt by the interested groups to dislocate them from their valuable property.
The meeting had been convened after news reports quoted DHA chief Brig Asif Ghazali as saying that DHA had decided to either demolish the Seaview apartments or give them a face-lift by sharing the cost with the owners. The owners might also be given an option of alternative accommodation.
The Seaview apartments were built over 30 years back, and, according to him, had completed their life span. Besides, these apartments were in a dilapidated condition and spoiled the overview and landscape of the beach.
The DHA had asked the residents to give their options and reply to the notices already sent to them by it. The move has created a feeling of fear and resentment among the Seaview residents.
