KARACHI: Admissions to medical colleges under scrutiny

KARACHI, May 25: The Chief Minister’s Inspection, Enquiries and Implementation Team (CMIE&IT) has started an enquiry into the admissions to Sindh medical institutions effected in the last five years.
Sources said that under the directives of the chief minister, conveyed to CMIE&IT a couple of days back, principals of medical colleges and the vice-chancellor of one medical university had been asked to furnish a complete list of all those students who were admitted during the last five years.
On a proposal from the Sindh health department, the CM in the last week of April had given his approval for a thorough examination of the enrolment and examination records of at least five years of MBBS students of the Dow Medical College Karachi, the Liaquat University of Medical and Health Science Jamshoro, the Chandka Medical College Larkana and the People’s Medical College Nawabshah.
The health department had informed the chief minister that the Governor’s Enquiries and Implementation Team (GE&IT) some months back had detected about 47 cases of “bogus” admissions at the SMC, and had been reassigned to conduct an enquiry to verify admissions to the last three sessions.
The team conducted further enquiry into SMC admissions to academic sessions of 1997-98, 1998-1999 and 1999-2000, which yielded some more cases of “bogus” admissions.
Agreeing with the findings and recommendations of GE&IT, the health department, in a summary, proposed to the chief minister that he should order constitution of an enquiry committee, ie CMIE&IT, to verify the record of at least five years of other public sector medical education institutions.
The CMIE&IT said that the latest probe pertaining to three medical colleges and one university was a time-consuming exercise, but the matter was being taken up on a top priority basis.
The sources added that the medical institutions in question were required to furnish particulars of those admitted in five years with offer-letters issued and other information on prescribed proformas within a week.
