LAHORE, May 23: Colic seems to have assumed epidemic proportions among the horses in the stables of the Lahore Racecourse.
Over half a dozen cases of colic were reported among horses recently, half of them proved fatal. The disease is common among horses and results in spasmodic gripping pain in animal’s belly. If not given proper veterinary care the colic may cause spontaneous death of animal.
The Lahore Race Club has set up a colic box in its veterinary hospital which is manned by veterinary doctors and technical staff.
However, owners and trainers have levelled serious allegations against veterinary hospital staff for being absent from duty at the time of need. They have urged the LRC authorities to appoint round-the-clock staff to look after such emergency cases.
Imported horses
The performance of three-year-old imported thoroughbred fillies have pleased their owners but cast a pall of gloom on owners of Pakistani bred horses because they have diminished prospects of their winning races.
The imported horses start their racing career from class IV division II and it has been seen that when they are in form they go on winning races and locally bred horses fail to match their performances.
There can be little doubt that this year’s imported fillies have been a surprising bunch. Laser Lass, Dock Lands Diva and Aegean Daisy have performed exceedingly well. All three have been improving with each running and are in fine fettle.
Undoubtedly they have stimulated plenty of interest and so much so race-goers enjoy seeing such honest sort of three-year-old winning at short odds and appreciate the standard of racing. But in races where they stride against owners of locally bred animals feels shy of competing with them.
