SIALKOT, May 19: Two constables sustained serious bullet injuries on Sunday night in an encounter with four dacoits in Glotiyan Khurd village, Daska tehsil.
A police party at a picket near the outhouse of Nanha Sahi spotted four armed motorcyclists. As they started chasing them, the outlaws opened fire on police. As a result, constables Muhammad Riaz and Mehboob Ahmad received critical bullet wounds. The police also returned the fire but the outlaws remained unhurt and managed to escape in the darkness. The injured constables were admitted to Daska DHQ Hospital in critical condition.
Daska Saddar police have registered a case.
STRIKE: The supply of raw material to the surgical industry remained suspended for the third consecutive day on Monday due to a continuous strike by the surgical forging industrial units in Sialkot, Daska, Sambrial and Ugoki.
Thousands of surgical forging industrial units continued their strike on the ninth consecutive day on Monday and held a protest demonstration against the issuance of ‘unjustified’ demand notices by the local sales tax department.
Talking to newsmen, Surgical Hammers Owners Association president Haji Irshad Ahmad and general secretary Saleem Mughal vowed to continue their strike till the withdrawal of these demand notices.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for the sales tax department claimed that these notices would not be taken back.
In a press release, local chamber of commerce and industry president Babar Iqbal expressed concern over the situation and said the strike was adversely affecting the export of surgical instruments.
He appealed to the prime minister, the federal commerce minister and the federal minister for industries to instruct the sales tax department to initiate a dialogue with these units in order to settle the issue.
GAMBLERS HELD: Sambrial police on Monday claimed to have arrested nine gamblers, including a constable, from a graveyard adjacent to darbar Baba Ameer Zarif, Bhopalwala, Daska.
However, the arrested constable, Abdul Sattar of Bambanwala police station, managed to escape by dodging the police.
A case has been registered against the constable and other gamblers Zahid Abbas, Mohsin Raza, Khurram Khan, Afzal Khan, Nawaz, Mushtaq, Zulfiqar, Nadir Khan and Anwar.
PADDY SOWING: The paddy sowing will start from Tuesday (today) in the Sialkot district.
District Nazim Mian Naeem Javaid said here on Monday that the paddy crop would be sown on over 467,120 acres of land in the Sialkot district.
