WASHINGTON, May 19: White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said on Monday that he was resigning his position and would join the private sector this summer after 21 years in government-connected work.

Mr Fleischer was spokesman for Elizabeth Dole during her 2000 bid for the Republican candidacy to challenge Vice-President Al Gore before joining the Bush team. He also worked as a staff member on Capital Hill.
