ISLAMABAD, May 17: Muhammad Nazir took over the lead in the professional category of the President of Pakistan Gold Medal Golf Championship on Saturday, carding four under par 68 as overnight leader Shabbir Iqbal slipped to second place at the Islamabad Club.
Nazir, of the local club, who was a stroke behind Shabbir going into the second round, had six birdies and two bogies as he finished the day with an aggregate of 134 over two days.
Two strokes behind the leader, Navy’s Shabbir carded one under par 71 that came following his excellent opening day’s score of seven under 65 as he aggregated 136 heading into Sunday’s final day. He double bogeyed twice and had an eagle and three bridies.
Imdad Hussain of Lahore Garrison moved into third spot after being in fourth place overnight with a score of 140 as he carded par 72 while there was a four-way tie for fourth place. Waheed Baluch, Muhammad Akram, Ghulam Hussain and Muhammad Tariq were all locked with scores of 141.
In the amateurs net tournament, Faisal Jamil, a 11 handicapper emerged the new leader with a net 70 for a total of 136 net. The Islamabad golfer was in second position overnight behind Nawaz Bhatti.
Nawaz scored net 72 for an aggregate of 137 net to be ahead of third-placed Brig Anwarul Haq who totalled 140 with a round of net 69.
Taimur Hasan led the field in the amateur gross competition as he scored 72 to total 139.
Four strokes away was Vaqas Ahmed, who too had a round of 72 on Saturday as he aggregated 143. Tariq Mehmood was third with 145 carding 71.
In the ladies event that began on Saturday, Islamabad’s Ahn Sook Hyun with a handicap of 23 was in the lead by hitting net 61. She was followed by Uzma Nazir of Rawalpindi Golf Club, a 20- handicapper, who was 72 net. Peshawar’s Farida Nazir with a 14- handicap struck net 74 to occupy third place.
Maj Waheed Zafar of Swat was in front in the seniors category with net 68 while M.M. Hashim Khan (net 71) of the host club stood second and A.W. Afridi (net 72) was third.
The juniors tournament saw PAF’s Bilal Tariq in the lead as he hit net 63. Three strokes adrift was Hamza Haroon (net 66) who was followed by Salman Jahangir with net 67.
