KARACHI: Body to investigate sacking of teachers

KARACHI, May 16: The city government education department has formed a committee to investigate the teachers’ termination before the summer vacation by the management of some private schools and asked the body to suggest necessary action against the institutions involved in this practice.

Sources at the EDO education office informed PPI here on Friday that during last few weeks, many teachers had approached the education department and complained that they had been sacked by the management of their schools to save salaries for June and July— the summer vacation.

They said private schools charge summer vacation fee from newly-admitted children or from those who wanted to leave the educational institution. But majority of schools expressed reluctance in paying salaries for June and July to their teaching staff, they added.

“Teachers are told that they will be paid salaries of June and July, if they complete one-year term as teacher in the institution. But the term never completes as teachers are sacked before they complete a year in that school,” said a women teaching at a private school.

It has also been found that some private schools pay their teachers only half of the salary agreed in a bid to keep them for a longer stretch of time, sources said and added that teachers falling victim to this unfair method complained that when they protested, they were told that total unpaid amount would be returned to them at the time of their leaving.

Majority of such private schools is not registered with the department concerned and their management scarcely cares to follow any rules and regulations.

REFUTATION: The Pakistan Private Schools Management Alliance chairman has refuted news regarding non-payment of salaries and removal of teachers of private schools from jobs before the summer vacation.

In a statement issued here on Friday, Chairman Malik Ishaq said there was no truth in such press reports. But he agreed that every year 10-15 per cent of the private schools in the city resorted to such unethical practice.

He said this practice by a few institutions defamed all the private schools of the city.
