KARACHI: Rangers to be deployed at pumping stations

KARACHI, May 14: Rangers will be deployed at as many as 71 pumping stations and major valves chambers in the next 24 hours to provide security to the officials of the city government’s water and sanitation department in regulating water supply system.
A request for deploying Rangers at 30 pumping stations and 41 valves chambers declared as ‘sensitive’ was made by the W&S department after it received complaints that a large number of union council Nazims had tempered with valves, taken illegal water connections from main lines, besides installing unauthorized boosters in various towns.
Initially, Rangers would provide security to the W&S department’s officials to ensure that valve operations are not tempered with and water supply schedule is implemented in letter and spirit.
Though the W&S department has also sought Rangers’ help in disconnecting illegal water connections and removing boosters unauthorizedly installed in different union councils, such an operation would, however, be launched in the next week.
The town-wise location of pumping stations and valves which have been declared as ‘sensitive’ where Rangers’ personnel would either be deployed or would keep on patrolling is as follows:
SITE TOWN: Qasba pumping station, Orangi Town; Banaras pumping station, Banaras Chowk, Orangi Town; 12-inch dia W-19 valve at Manghopir Road, near Sarhad Petrol pump and 18-inch dia sluice valve near Manghopir Colony entrance.
ORANGI TOWN: Al-Hira pumping station, Chisti Nagar, Orangi; Disco pumping station, Disco Morr; Zia pumping station, sector 10; Bewa pumping station, Block L; Gabol pumping station, New Power House; German pumping station, Gulshan-i-Behar; Faqir pumping station and Faqir Colony; 12-inch dia valve near UC-3 office; 12-inch dia near sector 10 market; 18-inch dia adjacent to Boi Khan hospital, 24-inch dia main valve at Urdu Chowk; 24-inch dia valve at right side of Urdu Chowk; 24-inch dia valve at left side of Urdu Chowk; 12-inch dia valve at Urdu Chowk; 33-inch dia at Urdu Chowk and 15-inch dia valve Nishan-i-Haider Chowk.
