KARACHI, May 13: Various towns in the city have launched the cleanliness drive, where sanitary workers and supervisors have been deputed to remove the garbage and debris.
The drive, initiated on the orders Governor Dr Ishratul Ibad, commenced on Monday and will continue for 14 days.
City Nazim Naimatullah Khan, flanked by Lyari Town Nazim Abdul Khaliq Juma, visited various parts of the town and stressed better sanitary conditions.
Gulshan-i-Iqbal Nazim Abdul Wahab had cancelled the leaves of all the staff under his administrative control and had deputed 50 sanitary workers to carry out work at night.
The staff had removed about 400 tonnes of garbage and debris from the areas around Jail Chowrangi, Edhi Centre UC IV, Aladin Park, Baloch Colony and Sherpao Basti.
TMO Matanat Ali Khan had issued orders to remove all stalls and encroachments from the main university road in front of old Sabzi Mandi.
Gulberg Town Nazim Farooq Naimatullah visited Musa Colony, Karimabad and blocks of F. B. Area to witness the pace of work in connection with the cleanliness drive.
Liaquatabad Town Nazim Dr Pervez Mehmood visited on Tuesday various localities of his constituency.
He met the office-bearers of Gulbahar Sanitary Market Association and issued on-the-spot orders to redress their problems. The water supply pipeline on Gulbahar Road was repaired in his presence and stagnant water was drained out.
Mr Mehmood directed all the sanitary inspectors of the health department that no incident of burning of garbage should take place in the area. Nearly 60 tonnes of garbage was removed from garbage dumps of Chuna Market and Super Market.
Jamshed Town Nazim Ashfaq Mujahid, in a press statement issued on Tuesday, said that the cleanliness drive would begin in his constituency on Wednesday.
He said that the leaves of all the sanitary staff had been cancelled and the campaign would be conducted daily.
The Nazim said that he would supervise the cleanliness drive and asked the elected representatives to play their active roles in the campaign.
KWSB: The Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) had also started cleaning the sewerage lines, repairing and covering the manholes during the ongoing cleanliness drive in the city.
KWSB chief engineer Aamo Romal paid surprise visits to all the 18 towns and reviewed the work.—PPI
